This index presents historical and modern wars and conflicts taking place in the present territory of, or relating to, Congo (known as Zaire 1971-1997). Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960. The territory had been under Belgian colonial rule since 1908. From 1877 to 1908, the territory was known as the Congo Free State under the direct rule of King Leopold II of Belgium.
