The Iran Hostage Crisis 1979-1981

In 1979 Iran seized 66 Americans at the American Embassy in Tehran (November 4) and held 52 of them for 444 days, while the Iranian government won several concessions from the United States, in the process severely harming the prestige of the United States and the political career of President Jimmy Carter. The hostages were released on the day President Ronald Reagan took office (January 20, 1981).

In 1980 American forces mounted Operation Desert One, a failed effort to rescue the hostages held in Iran (April 24-45).
