Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa 1960

On March 21, 1960, South African police opened fire on unarmed demonstrators at Sharpville, near Johannesburg, killing 67, with more than 200 casualties. This was a major event in the development of the long South African guerrilla war, as it decisively moved the African National Congress (ANC) away from nonviolence and into armed action, and as South Africa's issolation from the world community deepened. The massacre generated a British Commonwealth condemnation of apartheid.
