Irish Civil War 1921-1922

In 1921, Irish Republican Army militants who refused to accept the terms of the Irish War of Independence peace agreement, with its partition of Ireland, rebelled and were defeated by the new Irish Free State government, then began the long guerrilla war in Northern Ireland.

1922, Michael Collins (1890-1922), Irish intelligence head during the Irish War of Independence and commander of Irish Free State forces during the Irish Civil War, was killed in an insurgent ambush (August 22). Following the Irish Civil War, the Irish Free State was formally established; it became the Republic of Ireland in 1937.
