Revolt in Haiti 1915

In early 1915, Vilbrun Guillaume Sam (d. 1915) and his followers seized control of the government of Haiti, a country then in dissarray because of revolutionaries. Sam held the presidency until a hostile Haitian mob assassinated him on July 28, 1915. With the country in anarchy, US Marines who had recently landed at the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince carried out the orders of of US president Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), protecting foreigners and foreign property and supervising the election of a new president. Philippe Sudre Dartiguenave (1863-after 1922) became president and enforced a treaty under which Haiti was proclaimed (September 16, 1915) a political and economic protectorate of the United States, with customs turned over to American officials and a Haitian gendarmerie (police corps) under American control.
