Chibata Revolt in Brazil 1910

During the presidency of Marshal Hermes Rodrigues da Fonseca (1910-14), nephew of the the first Brazilian president, Deodoro da Fonseca, turmoil spread across Brazil. On November 22, 1910, João Cândido led black sailors of the Brazilian navy in revolt, protesting extreme physical punishments. The Revolta da Chibata (whipping revolt) resulted in the rebel seizure of the new Brazilian dreadnoughts São Paulo and Minas Gerais as well as some smaller vessels in Guanabara Bay at Rio de Janeiro. On board the Minas Gerais several officers were killed, among them her commanding officer. In the course of this mutiny, residential districts of Bahia were shelled sporadically and the appearance of the ships off Rio de Janeiro caused panic. The capital was threatened with bombardment. President da Fonseca was forced to grant the rebels their demands and to give them amnesty.
