The U-2 Incident 1960

Soviet forces shot down an American U-2 reconnaissance plane in Soviet airspace, capturing its pilot, Francis Gary powers (May 1). Powers was imprisoned as a spy and later exchanged for Soviet spy Rudolph Abel (February 1962).
