Strait of Hormuz Incident 1988

An Iranian civilian airliner carrying 290 passengers was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz by a surface-to-air missile fired from the cruiser USS Vincennes, the Americans having mistaken it for an attacking warplane (July 3). All aboard were killed.
