Dorr's Rebellion in Rhode Island 1842

Thomas Wilson Dorr (1805-54), a Providence lawyer, organized the People's Party to reform the Rhode Island constitution and gain universal manhood suffrage. His supporters, the Dorrites, at an unofficial "people's convention," established a separate state government with Dorr as governor, opposed to the legitimate state government. Dorr tried unsuccessfully to seize the state arsenal at Providence to secure his position. His government, however, collaped amid armed clashes between Dorrites and the state militia, and Dorr fled from Rhode Island. In late 1842, the state government extended the vote to all native-born male whites.
