In 1897 a small-scale border war on the Afghan-British frontier grew into a substantial conflict as Pathan forces attacked many British installations (July), taking the Khyber Pass (August). A British autumn campaign took an army of 44,000 into Pathan-held mountain territory, with inconclusive results.
In 1898 British forces recaptured the Khyber Pass (March).
