With the call "Down with Yankee Imperialists," Nicaraguan liberals rose in rebellion in July 1912. At the request of Diaz, about 2,500 US Marines were soon landed in Nicaragua to protect the conservative government, and in two months the rebellion was quelled. Under US military supervision, elections were held in 1912, with Diaz being elected president of Nicaragua; a legation guard of about 100 US Marines remained in the country for 13 years.
