The Cape Frontier Wars also called KAFFIR, OR KAFIR, WARS (1779-1879), involved 100 years of intermittent warfare between the Cape colonists and the Xhosa agricultural and pastoral peoples of the Eastern Cape, in South Africa. One of the most prolonged struggles by African peoples against European intrusion, it ended in the annexation of Xhosa territories by the Cape Colony and the incorporation of its peoples.
In 1877-78 the Ngika and Gcaleka sections of the Xhosa, who had acquired guns on the diamond fields and were eager to regain lost lands, took up arms against the colonists and their allies, the Mfengu. After these wars the remaining Xhosa territories were gradually incorporated into the Cape Colony.
