Iraqi Annexation Threat: Kuwait 1960

Oil-rich Kuwait became an independent nation (June 19) and immediately became a target for several of its larger neighbors. British forces were augmented in the Persian Gulf (December), deterring planned Iraqi annexation of Kuwait.
