In 1919, Arab leader Faisal had been promised Syria by the British, but the French -- who by a covert postwar agreement succeeded the British in Syria -- did not keep the promise; fighting between Arab and French forces began (December).
In 1920 in Syria, fighting between Frech occupying forces and Faisal's Arab army continued; the French took Damascus (July), and Faisal fled the country.
In 1921, after the French expelled Faisal from Syria, the British placed him on the throne of Iraq, declaring it a protectorate.
