Conflicting claims to the region of western Karelia led to desultory fighting between Finns and Russians from June 1919 to October 14, 1920, when the Treaty of Dorpat (Tartu) end hostilities, reaffirmed Finland's independence, and awarded the Arctic port of Pechenga to the Finns.
