In 1924, the liberal Gerardo Machado y Morales (1871-1939) was elected president of Cuba; he later secured a constitutional amendment providing for a six-year presidency and was reelected in 1928. Machado's dictatorial policies and suppression of freedoms were strongly opposed by students at the University of Havana, which was closed in 1930 because of severe student agitation; numerous students and faculty members were imprisoned or killed.
