The proposed reforms of Alfredo Gonzalez Flores (1877-after 1967), elected democratic president of Costa Rica since 1913, were opposed by General Federico Tinoco Granados (1870-1931), who led a military revolt that overthrew Gonzalez and his government (January 27, 1917). Tinoco set up a military dictatorship.
