Boer Anti-War Uprising 1914

In August 1914, Louis Botha and Jan Smuts, amid much controversy, took South Africa into World War I on the side of the British. Many Afrikaners felt no loyalty to Britain and opposed going to war with Germany, which had aided them during the South African War (Great Boer War 1899-1902). Unrest in September was contained. In October 1914, however, Boer extremists, led by former Boer General Christiaan De Wet and others, rose up in protest against the Union of South Africa's declaration of war against Germany. The armed uprising of nearly 10,000 men in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal was ultimately suppressed by government forces in February 1915.
