For many years, the Basuto (also spelled Sotho) under King Moshweshwe (c. 1786-1880) [also spelled Moshoeshoe and Mosheshu] successfully resisted encroachments of the Boers of the Orange Free State, with who they competed for pasture and farmland. By the mid-1860s, however, the power to resist Boer encroachment into the Basuto (also spelled Lesotho) kingdom was waning and Boer strength had grown. As fighting broke out in 1865, the Boers gained the upper hand. Moshweshwe appealed for British protection, but British negotiators were unsuccessful in reaching an agreement. By the Treaty of Thaba Bosiu in 1866 the Orange Free State acquired most of Basutoland.
