The asantehene, Prempah (1871-1831) refused to pay an indemnity imposed by the British after the third war and to honor the British residents of the area. War broke out. British troops again took Kumansi, the Ashanti capital, and captured Prempeh and other Ashanti leaders. Prempah was exiled to the Seychelles. The Ashanti confederation was dissolved, and the protectorate secured. However, the British did not fully occupy the area. One estimate of the casualties suggests losses of 6000.
